A Bisl About Us

DAVAR is a registered charity (No: 1136652). We began life in 1995 as a voluntary organisation dedicated to promoting events that advance the appreciation and understanding of Jewish life, culture and history. Over the years we have put on a variety of exciting events including:

  • A Jewish Book Festival
  • A Jewish Food Day
  • Art Exhibitions at the RWA
  • A series of Concerts at St George’s, Bristol

Our annual programme comprises of two seasons: an Autumn season (Sept – Dec) and a Spring season (Jan – Apr). Each season has a series of three to four talks and three to four films.

The talks cover a wide spectrum of topics, ranging from history, to philosophy, to art, to humour and to personal reflections.

Davar (דָּבָר) is an ancient Hebrew noun that means “word,” “speech,” or “thing.” In communication Davar is frequently used to denote the act of speaking or conveying messages.
Bisl (ביסל) is Yiddish for a ‘little bit’.
