SUMMARY:Escape from Pretoria
DESCRIPTION:Australia\, South Africa\, UK 2020\, 106 mins\, English \nDirector Francis Annan\, featuring Daniel Radcliffe\, Daniel Webber\, Ian Hart \nBased on the real-life prison break of two political captives\, this is a race-against-time thriller set in the tumultuous apartheid days of South Africa in the late 1970s.  Two white South Africans\, Tim Jenkin and Stephen Lee\, are arrested for carrying out anti-apartheid missions. Sentenced to twelve years and eight years respectively\, they are transported to Pretoria Prison where Jenkin plans their daring escape.  In the prison they meet veteran ANC activist Denis Goldberg\, who received a life sentence in 1964 alongside Nelson Mandela for previous work against apartheid. He shows them the ropes but discourages them from trying to escape. \n“The film has something pleasingly traditional about it\, with tense nail-biting moments and touches of The Great Escape and Papillon.” (Peter Bradshaw\, The Guardian) \nShare this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)

SUMMARY:Shoshana
DESCRIPTION:Drawing on real events\, Shoshana is a romantic/political thriller set in 1930s/early 1940s Palestine. ‘Shoshana Borochov is the real-life figure cutting a dash through Tel Aviv high society in this exciting time of Jewish self-determination and utopian dreaming. She spends her days passionately debating politics at dockside cafes or dodging the bombs and bullets of the Zionist militant group Irgun. Her nights are reserved for conducting a dangerous love affair with a British intelligence officer\, Tom Wilkin …Shoshana clearly defines its own purview\, giving valuable insight into the variance of opinion within the era’s Zionist movement\, while also highlighting the central role of a third player in this fraught and bloody history: British colonialism.’ Ellen Jones\, Feb. 2024\, The Guardian \n \nDirector Michael Winterbottom\, featuring Irina Starshenbaum\, Douglas Booth\nUK 2023\, 119 mins\, English \nShare this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)

SUMMARY:Camille Pissarro – Father of Impressionism
DESCRIPTION:Despite being one of the founding members of one the most famous artistic movement of all time\, Camille Pissarro remains less well-known than his associates\, Cézanne\, Monet and Degas. He was the oldest of the Impressionists and the only one to exhibit at all eight of their exhibitions which he helped organise from 1874–86. His central role is all the more remarkable considering his outsider-origins. He was born to French-Jewish parents in the Danish West Indies and was 25 before he settled finally in France. This illustrated talk will look at his life\, his work\, his creative collaborations\, and his legacy. \nKeren Durant is a long-time member and treasurer of the DAVAR committee. Keren has an MA in History of Art from the University of Bristol and has given occasional talks to the Bristol U3A Art Appreciation Group\, DAVAR and Limmud. \nShare this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)

SUMMARY:Torch Song Trilogy
DESCRIPTION:DAVAR is thrilled to revisit this poignant 1988 comedy-drama. Adapted by Harvey Fierstein from his Broadway play of the same name\, the film offers an intimate portrayal of fictional female impersonator\, Arnold Beckhoff. From the early 1970s to 1980 (pre-AIDs) we follow the heartbreaks of this lovable drag queen\, who\, as Roger Ebert (1988) writes\, ‘laughs first so that the joke is never on him’. The young Matthew Broderick plays Alan\, the love of Arnold’s life and victim of a violent homophobic attack. Anne Bancroft plays Arnold’s Jewish mother who struggles to come to terms with her son’s homosexuality. Join us in viewing this classic on the big screen now\, while you can.\nDirector Paul Bogart\, featuring Harvey Fierstein\, Anne Bancroft\nUSA 1988\, 120 mins\, English \nShare this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)

SUMMARY:The Spoils
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis film is shown in conjunction with UK Jewish Film Festival 2024\nNOTE – Tickets must be booked via the UKJFF box office \n \nOwnership\, history and morality are the poignant themes tackled here in relation to the restitution of art looted by the Nazis and the ongoing crises in the art world. SUMMARY:Memoirs of a Pioneering Hebrew Educator: a vanished European heritage and new frontiers in Africa
DESCRIPTION:This talk will trace the extraordinary life and times of Lithuanian born Alexander Levin\, through his 1954 autobiography as a pioneering Hebrew educator across Eastern Europe at the turn of last century and through the inter-war years. Mervyn will share Alexander’s eyewitness experiences\, both of severe discrimination and the delights of now vanished Jewish life and identity\, across Lithuania\, Ukraine\, Belarus and Russia. The fascinating memoir achieved a wider audience when translated into English only 5 years ago. The family emigrated to South Africa in 1928 where Alexander became the founding Principal of the first Jewish day school in South Africa. Mervyn recently travelled to Lithuania to retrace Alexander’s footsteps and will share his experiences. The learnings have relevance today\, both in the context of the Holocaust and current geopolitical conflict in the Region. \nMervyn Levin is Alexander’s South African born grandson. He has a first-class Honours degree in Political Science from the University of Cape Town. Like his grandfather who escaped military service from Lithuania to Ukraine\, Mervyn became a refugee in the UK\, also by avoiding conscription\, at the height of the apartheid era. His international career spans policy\, commercial and research areas\, initially for Reuters and subsequently in policy positions as the UK Government’s first head of Digital Content policy. He has done business in over 40 countries and now lives in Bristol. Remaining active today\, he is also an Honorary Research Fellow in Digital Humanities at University of Sheffield. \nShare this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)

SUMMARY:Our House: Stories of the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:  \nLisa Lipman talks to journalist and radio producer Jo Glanville about her BBC radio documentary Our House\, in which she meets Berliners who have  researched the history of the Jewish families who once lived in their homes. Their discoveries are an intimate and moving portrait of lives that were turned upside down and offer a new way of honouring the memory of German Jews who lost everything in the Holocaust. First broadcast on the BBC World Service on Holocaust Memorial Day 2023\, Jo also tracks down the house where her own mother spent part of her childhood and meets one of the last surviving residents\, now living in the UK. It is a revelatory journey\, uncovering forgotten family stories and revealing how the Nazis deprived Jews of the right to live in their own homes. \nJo Glanville regularly produces and presents programmes for BBC Radio 4\, BBC Radio 3 and BBC World Service. Her journalism has been published in the Guardian\, Prospect\, London Review of Books and the New York Times. She is the editor of Looking for an Enemy: eight essays on antisemitism (Short Books/WW Norton) and Qissat: short stories by Palestinian women (Saqi). \nLisa Lipman has been directing and telling stories on popular programmes for the BBC and other channels for the last 30 years. A colleague of Jo’s\, she is very much looking forward to finding out more about how Jo discovered and pursued this story. \nMembers              – free entry \nFriends & Guests – £8.00 at the door \nShare this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)

SUMMARY:Bella Chagall - a String of Pearls and the Golden Chain
DESCRIPTION:Marc Chagall frequently painted his wife\, Bella; her cultural contribution\, though\, is not so well known. In her two posthumously published works\, the world of her youth\, her Hasidic upbringing in pre-war Vitebsk come to life\, noisily and brightly\, through the eyes of a girl jostling for a better view in the women’s gallery of the synagogue. Escaping Europe in 1940\, her writing is a testimony to that world on the eve of its destruction and represents a turning point in Yiddish literature\, when the memoir would become the most important genre. “Will the busy people of today be able to immerse themselves in her world and her writing?” Marc introduced one of her books\, “will others come along later to take in the scent of her flowers and her art?” This illustrated talk will look at her life\, her work\, and her outstanding contribution to Jewish literature. \nOsian Evans Sharma is a Yiddish language teacher based in the UK. A master’s graduate of UCL\, he has studied Yiddish in London\, Tel Aviv and Berlin\, and taught Yiddish for the Jewish Music Institute\, Leo Baeck College\, Babel’s Blessing and London synagogues. He has written for Forverts\, The Jewish Chronicle\, In Geveb and Leo Baeck College’s Lehrhaus. He is one of the organisers of the annual Yiddish Sof-Vokh UK\, a cinephile and amateur puppeteer. \nMembers              – Free \nFriends & Guests – £8.00 at the door \n  \nShare this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)

SUMMARY:Elena: A Hand Made Life
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nLives were bent in the furnaces of the twentieth century\, but Granny was unbroken. With a stethoscope\, a jar of herring and a hearing aid occasionally switched on\, she forged an extraordinary life. Dr Elena Zadik ran through the twentieth century without looking back.  A refugee twice before she was 17\, a GP in the NHS from 1948 to her retirement\, Elena was an unintentionally hilarious woman\, often difficult\, always opinionated and deeply resourceful. Her hands were always busy and form the heart of this timely graphic story of the ordinary extraordinary resilience of women.  It brings with it an unfathomable power and richness. Come to this illustrated talk to hear more about Elena’s life and Miriam’s creative journey making this book. \nArt teacher and graphic novelist Miriam Gold lives and works in London\, where she was born. She won a place on the Emerging Writer Programme at the London Library with Elena: A Hand Made Life\, her first book\, a memoir/biography of her maternal grandmother.  An Observer Graphic Novel of the Month\, it was also one of the Guardian‘s best of 2024\, shortlisted for the Wingate Prize and longlisted for a World Illustration Award from the Association of Illustrators. She is currently working on her next book\, also to be published by Jonathan Cape\, a graphic novel set in Budapest in 1956 and London in 2024. \nShare this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)

SUMMARY:It's About Time
DESCRIPTION:Why does Easter ‘move about’? And why doesn’t Christmas? Why might Muslims return from the mosque disappointed at the end of Ramadan? Why can you not find out the date of Chinese New Year 2028? Why does February only have 28 days in a normal year? Is the Jewish calendar really unreasonable? In this session\, Clive will explore the variety of calendars from around the world\, drawing from his past experience as editor and compiler of the seminal ‘Calendar of World Religions’ Festivals’. Proposing that calendars are one of the quickest routes to understanding a culture\, Clive will look at a number of calendars in use around the world\, set in context the Jewish calendar and consider whether or not it is one of the most obvious or strangest to be found on the globe. \n \nClive Lawton\, currently CEO of the Commonwealth Jewish Council\, a tribunal Chair for the NHS\, scholar-in-residence at London’s JW3 Jewish cultural centre and a Presiding Justice on the Wiltshire Bench\, became a leading calendrical expert through his work on world religions and their festivals back in the 1980s. With over a dozen books published and several degrees\, most relevant here is a Master’s in Hinduism and Islam from the University of Liverpool. Clive is perhaps best known in the Jewish world as one of the four founders of Limmud and was responsible for its worldwide spread. \nShare this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)

SUMMARY:Captain Guillon – The Cruel Price of Resistance in South West France
DESCRIPTION:This is the story of an ordinary human being who showed remarkable moral and physical courage in demonstrating solidarity and support for Jewish refugees who\, mistakenly\, thought they would be safe from Nazi persecution by fleeing to the “Free Zone” in Southern France. As Captain of the Gendarmerie in Villefranche-de-Rouergue\, Lucien Guillon risked his personal safety and that of his family by issuing visas\, fabricating identity papers and warning Jews of pending roundups. He paid the price of dismissal\, arrest and deportation to Neuenbürg and Ravensbrook concentration camps for his resistance activities.  It was not until 1995 that France formally recognized its role in the roundup and deportation of Jews to Nazi concentration camps. In 2012 President Hollande opened to the public the National Archives of WW2. This study has also benefited from testimonies from family\, survivors\, and archivists at the Neuenbürg Memorial Museum. \n \nHamish Macdonald taught History in Secondary Schools in and around Bristol and worked as an Education Adviser for Bristol Children and Young People’s Service. He also published several history books written for school students. Since 2010 he has lived near Villefranche-de-Rouergue in South West France where he continues to work as an historian and writer. Following his investigation of local and national archives\, and other resources\, he has just completed a biography of a Gendarme who was in the French Resistance during the Second World war. \nShare this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)

SUMMARY:Yiddish Food Culture: And What About the Taste?
DESCRIPTION:Growing up in Lithuania and Israel before finally settling in England\, where I have lived for more than 30 years\, I ended up with a huge collection of recipes on scraps of paper in five different languages. Many of the dishes I cook today I learnt from my mother and mother-in-law at a time when recipes were transmitted by word of mouth. I have always been passionate about food and cooking\, so in 2022 I wrote a book ‘And What About the Taste?’ to preserve and pass on this Jewish food heritage to my family. It is a domestic cookbook filled with recipes that reflect the seasons\, the religious calendar\, and Yiddish culture. In honouring the Jewish belief that food is a sacred focus of family life\, the book is full of anecdotes about the people and places associated with the dishes. In this talk I will share many of these stories and recipes and hopefully encourage others to participate with their own memories from home. \n \nDr Sima Beeri was born in Lithuania\, where Yiddish was her first language. As a teenager\, she moved to Israel and eventually settled in London. Sima has a PhD from University College London (UCL) where she taught Yiddish culture and language. She recently retired from university but still teaches privately and at Ot Azoy\, a Yiddish summer school in London. Sima has published two books and is working on her third. \nShare this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)

SUMMARY:Last Musician of Auschwitz
DESCRIPTION:Last Musician of Auschwitz \nUK 2025\, 90 mins\, English \nDirector Toby Trackman\, featuring Anita Lasker-Wallfisch \nHow can there be music in the worst place in the world? Told through the words of victims of the camp who played and created music during the terrors of the Holocaust\, this film shows how music could be a lifeline\, a way to give testimony and even a way to resist. Woven throughout are new interpretations of musical works written by victims of the camp\, mainly filmed at resonant locations in the environs of Auschwitz. Between them\, they touch on themes of loss\, longing and cultural memory\, and address head on the barbaric and murderous regime at Auschwitz.  Toby Trackman’s landmark theatrical feature documentary The Last Musician of Auschwitz was a centrepiece of the BBC’s commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the camp and is currently touring the worldwide festival circuit. \nShare this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)

SUMMARY:The Jewish Christian relationship: parent and child or siblings?
DESCRIPTION:  \nT \nThe Jewish Christian relationship: parent and child or siblings? \nCanon Guy Wilkinson CBE • Bristol \nWhilst the Church of England from 1942 with the formation of the Council of Christians and Jews has issued numerous statements condemning antisemitism\, it was not until 2019 that the C of E’s Faith and Order Commission published its formal guidance on how the C of E’s relationship with Judaism should theologically and practically be understood. ‘God’s Unfailing Word’ states that it should be understood from the perspective that ‘the Christian–Jewish relationship is a gift of God to the Church.’ I will look at the ‘Difficult history’ and the ‘Distinctive relationship’ which it considers. It should be emphasised that although there is an afterword by Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis\, this is not a joint document\, but one which represents the current view of the Church of England. \n \nGuy Wilkinson has worked on aid programmes in Africa\, and in the European Commission in Brussels. He then attended theological college\, was ordained as a priest in the Church of England in 1987 and served in several parishes before becoming Archdeacon of Bradford. He served as the Archbishop of Canterbury’s and C of E’s Inter Religious Affairs Adviser before serving as Inter Faith Adviser to the bishop of Salisbury and now to the bishop of Bristol. He is married to Tessa and they have five children. \nShare this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)
