SUMMARY:Once upon a time in Egypt - Memories of a bygone era
DESCRIPTION:In this conversation with Lisa Lipman\, Viviane will discuss her childhood in Egypt and her memories of growing up in a Jewish community which at the time numbered 80\,000 . They all left or were expelled between 1948 and 1967. The 1930s to early 1950s are considered Egypt’s golden era\, when Cairo was known as the Pearl of the Nile. Viviane will evoke a world which no longer exists and will talk about a Sephardi community with its unique customs and traditions. She will also discuss her experience as a refugee\, bringing with it both trauma and a loss of identity. \nViviane Bowell was born and raised in Cairo in a Sephardi community. Her maternal grandparents came from Aleppo in Syria and her paternal ancestors had been expelled from Spain in 1492 before settling in the Ottoman Empire. Expelled from Egypt in 1956\, Viviane’s family arrived in England as penniless refugees and were placed in a disused hostel in the West of England before moving to London.  There she attended a French school and later went to university as a mature student and obtained a law degree.  Viviane moved to Bristol nearly 20 years ago and currently volunteers for two charities supporting refugees and asylum seekers. Since publishing her memoirs and recipe book soon after Covid\, she continues to promote the little-known story of Egyptian Jews and Jews from Arab lands. \nLisa Lipman has been directing and telling stories on popular programmes and documentaries for the BBC and other channels over the last 30 years. As long as we are watching\, history is not over yet. The three minutes of footage\, mostly in colour\, are the only moving images left of the Jewish inhabitants of Nasielsk before the Holocaust. The existing three minutes are examined to unravel the stories hidden in the celluloid. The footage is imaginatively edited to create a film that lasts over an hour. Different voices enhance the images. Glenn Kurtz\, grandson of David Kurtz\, provides his knowledge of the footage. Thus starts the award-winning film\, The Day before Creation\, and its companion volume\, Malkah’s Notebook\, documenting Malkah’s lifelong journey into Jewish mystical texts\, far-off places\, archaeological digs\, ancient gods\, and ultimately into the nature of existence itself. The book was illustrated by Josh Baum who lives in Israel. In Josh’s work as an artist and scribe\, he explores the Hebrew letters as sacred signs as well as objects of profound beauty.  Join Mira Z Amiras\, PhD\, writer and director of both the book and film\, and Josh’s brother\, Sam Baum\, the film’s animator.  We will screen the whole film (38m) at the start of the evening so the event will be longer than the normal hour. \nMira Z Amiras\, Ph.D. is an anthropologist\, author\, and award-winning filmmaker. She began her journey into the mystical Aleph-Bet at her father’s knee and studied further with her mentor\, Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi. She has lived\, studied\, and travelled throughout the Middle East and North Africa\, camped out 7\,000 miles through Africa\, across the Sahara and overland from Brussels to the Nepalese border. She received her PhD from the University of California and is Professor Emerita of Comparative Religious Studies at San Jose. SUMMARY:Berlin to London: An Emotional History of two Refugees
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Esther Saraga explores her complex and ambivalent relationships as daughter and academic to a vast collection of family papers concerned with my parents’ forced migration from Nazi Germany.  She recognised that the letters do not ‘speak for themselves’\, but tell several different possible stories.   I have used the papers to explore ‘how it felt’ to live through these historic events. The experiences of these two refugees\, set in their historical context\, shed light on life in Nazi Germany\, the difficulties of getting out and into the UK\, and on British attitudes and policies towards refugees. Their contradictory experiences challenge simple views of Britain’s liberal tradition of welcoming refugees. She draws parallels between her parents’ experiences in the 1930s and people today – both refugees and the children of the Windrush generation – in relation to issues such as the ‘tyranny of documentation’\, statelessness and problems with the Home Office. \nEsther Saraga is the daughter of German Jewish refugees. She has forty years’ experience teaching and researching in higher education\, moving from a first degree in mathematics in Cambridge to a PhD in Psychology in London\, feeling finally at home as a feminist critical social scientist at the Open University.  She retired in 2009 to concentrate on this project. It is produced by Tracey Goldring who is founder of Searching for Identity\, an organisation that works with second and third generation of Holocaust survivors in the United States. XXXX \nAfter viewing the film\, Marian Liebmann will lead a discussion\, firstly about the film\, and secondly about the varied experiences of being Second Generation. Marian lives in Bristol and is a longstanding member of DAVAR. Her parents were Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany. DESCRIPTION:Despite being one of the founding members of one the most famous artistic movement of all time\, Camille Pissarro remains less well-known than his associates\, Cézanne\, Monet and Degas. He was the oldest of the Impressionists and the only one to exhibit at all eight of their exhibitions which he helped organise from 1874–86. His central role is all the more remarkable considering his outsider-origins. He was born to French-Jewish parents in the Danish West Indies and was 25 before he settled finally in France. SUMMARY:Memoirs of a Pioneering Hebrew Educator: a vanished European heritage and new frontiers in Africa
DESCRIPTION:This talk will trace the extraordinary life and times of Lithuanian born Alexander Levin\, through his 1954 autobiography as a pioneering Hebrew educator across Eastern Europe at the turn of last century and through the inter-war years. Mervyn will share Alexander’s eyewitness experiences\, both of severe discrimination and the delights of now vanished Jewish life and identity\, across Lithuania\, Ukraine\, Belarus and Russia. The fascinating memoir achieved a wider audience when translated into English only 5 years ago. The family emigrated to South Africa in 1928 where Alexander became the founding Principal of the first Jewish day school in South Africa. Mervyn recently travelled to Lithuania to retrace Alexander’s footsteps and will share his experiences. The learnings have relevance today\, both in the context of the Holocaust and current geopolitical conflict in the Region. \nMervyn Levin is Alexander’s South African born grandson. He has a first-class Honours degree in Political Science from the University of Cape Town. Like his grandfather who escaped military service from Lithuania to Ukraine\, Mervyn became a refugee in the UK\, also by avoiding conscription\, at the height of the apartheid era. His international career spans policy\, commercial and research areas\, initially for Reuters and subsequently in policy positions as the UK Government’s first head of Digital Content policy. He has done business in over 40 countries and now lives in Bristol. DESCRIPTION:Marc Chagall frequently painted his wife\, Bella; her cultural contribution\, though\, is not so well known. In her two posthumously published works\, the world of her youth\, her Hasidic upbringing in pre-war Vitebsk come to life\, noisily and brightly\, through the eyes of a girl jostling for a better view in the women’s gallery of the synagogue. Escaping Europe in 1940\, her writing is a testimony to that world on the eve of its destruction and represents a turning point in Yiddish literature\, when the memoir would become the most important genre. “Will the busy people of today be able to immerse themselves in her world and her writing?” Marc introduced one of her books\, “will others come along later to take in the scent of her flowers and her art?” This illustrated talk will look at her life\, her work\, and her outstanding contribution to Jewish literature. \nOsian Evans Sharma is a Yiddish language teacher based in the UK. A master’s graduate of UCL\, he has studied Yiddish in London\, Tel Aviv and Berlin\, and taught Yiddish for the Jewish Music Institute\, Leo Baeck College\, Babel’s Blessing and London synagogues. He has written for Forverts\, The Jewish Chronicle\, In Geveb and Leo Baeck College’s Lehrhaus. DESCRIPTION:Why does Easter ‘move about’? And why doesn’t Christmas? Why might Muslims return from the mosque disappointed at the end of Ramadan? Why can you not find out the date of Chinese New Year 2028? Why does February only have 28 days in a normal year? Is the Jewish calendar really unreasonable? In this session\, Clive will explore the variety of calendars from around the world\, drawing from his past experience as editor and compiler of the seminal ‘Calendar of World Religions’ Festivals’. Proposing that calendars are one of the quickest routes to understanding a culture\, Clive will look at a number of calendars in use around the world\, set in context the Jewish calendar and consider whether or not it is one of the most obvious or strangest to be found on the globe. \n \nClive Lawton\, currently CEO of the Commonwealth Jewish Council\, a tribunal Chair for the NHS\, scholar-in-residence at London’s JW3 Jewish cultural centre and a Presiding Justice on the Wiltshire Bench\, became a leading calendrical expert through his work on world religions and their festivals back in the 1980s. With over a dozen books published and several degrees\, most relevant here is a Master’s in Hinduism and Islam from the University of Liverpool.
