DESCRIPTION:Jews by the Seaside\nPam Fox • London\n\nPam will be talking about her book which describes the rise and decline of Bournemouth’s Jewish hotels and guest houses within the context of Anglo-Jewish history\, the growth of Bournemouth as a premier resort and the evolution of its Jewish community. From the first small Jewish boarding houses in the late nineteenth century\, the book charts the emergence of ever-more luxurious hotels during the inter-war years\, capturing the heady atmosphere and glamour of the ‘Big Eight’ hotels and the more intimate environments of the smaller establishments in their heyday following the Second World War. Based largely on interviews\, the text is replete with humorous and poignant memories and stories. \nFor the last fifteen years Pam Fox has been working full time as a Jewish historian\, researcher and writer. She has developed a specialism in writing books and articles on modern Jewish history largely based on memories and stories to bring their narratives alive. Her recent books include: The Jewish Community of Golders Green: A Social History\, History in the Baking – The Rinkoff Story\, and Jews by the Seaside\, The Jewish Hotels and Guest Houses of Bournemouth. Her latest book Noshtalgia\, The Bloom’s Story was published last year. She is currently working on a new book about the famous Grodzinski bakery.

Born in Karlovy Vary (then Karlsbad)\, he studied composition in Prague and continued his musical education in Berlin. However\, because of his Jewish ancestry\, he was forced to leave Germany in the early 1930s and flee into exile which fundamentally altered both his career and personal life. Little has been written about his life and there still remain relatively few recordings of his works. Learn more about his fascinating life and some of the other holocaust composers who were less fortunate as well as hearing some of Kaufman‘s eclectic compositions. \nYoav Ben-Shlomo is a lover of music\, including classical\, jazz and klezmer. He has collected classical pieces inspired by Jewish themes and composers over the years and loves to share his love of music with others.

DESCRIPTION:The Battle of Cable Street ninety years on\nRuth Levitas • Bristol\n\nOn 4 October 1936 Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists set out to march through the Jewish East End of London. It was the fourth anniversary of the BUF (British Union of Fascists)\, and its choice of route a deliberate provocation. There were strong appeals to the Home Secretary Sir John Simon to ban the march but he refused. The Board of Deputies advised Jewish residents to stay home and keep out of trouble. About 250\,000 East End residents – Jews\, Irish dockers\, trade unionists and communists – turned out to stop the march. As the police tried and failed to clear a route for Mosley through Aldgate or through Cable Street\, the battle was not between fascists and anti-fascists\, but between the residents and the police. The day’s events are commemorated in a mural on the side of St George’s Town Hall in Cable Street. This talk looks at what actually happened on the day\, its political context\, why this has become such an iconic event\, and what might be its significance for us today. \nRuth Levitas is Professor Emerita of Sociology at the University of Bristol and author of several books and academic articles. Her uncle Max Levitas and her father Morry were both at the Battle of Cable Street in 1936\, aged 21 and 19. Morry went on to join the International Brigades in Spain. She is currently writing a history of her diasporic extended family\, including those who lived in London’s East End.
